The weather forecast was windy so we set ourselves for an early start. We were at the bakery shortly after it opened at 6:30 am. Coffee and breakfast dealt with then we headed to the river to load the gear into the kayaks. We have a lot of gear as we camp out whenever we can.
With everything in its place in the kayaks we launch and paddle away from Waikerie. The wind picked up but for most of the morning it was benign and sometimes helpful. We made good progress and arrive at Lock 2 after 22 km just before 11:30 am. Simon rings the Lock Keeper and he opens the Lock for us. He was not a talkative type. (Might have been driving a harvester all night!)
The wind has picked it and is swirling around inside the Lock Chamber which meant we had to work to maintain our position as the water dropped. As we came out the other side we had to fight our way into the wind. Once around the next bend it was easier going.
We paddled for another hour before finding a spot to pull out for lunch. Simon had bought a "Pull-a-Part" loaf from the bakery which made a very nice lunch.
After lunch we paddled for another two hours. The wind was now in our face and there were rolling waves coming down the river at us. At a couple of spot the waves were steeper probably because of sandbars. We started looking for campsites and hopped out to investigate one spot before Simon switched on his phone and discovered we were close to Hogwash Bend Campsite.
